The Role of Antioxidants
|
|
The following are just some of the causes of free radical formation: - Eating artificial, processed foods (90% of our diets)
- Eating too much table sugar (approximately 163 pounds per man, woman & child)
- Eating too many high glycemic foods
- Cigarette smoking
- Exposure to chemicals in the air (including rural areas)
- Water pollution (there are toxins in our tap water and some of the "bottle" waters are really tap water)
- Home environmental toxins
- Healthy exercise (actually produces free agents, but you should still exercise!!)
- Prescription medicines (some more than others)
- Chemotherapy and radiation therapy
- Preservatives (BHT, BHA, benzoate, sulfites, nitrogen oxide)
- Food colorings (i.e. FD & C Yellow #5, 6, etc..)
- Heavy metal exposure like mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum and nickel.
- Exposure to heavy metals has been implicated in neurobehavorial disorders, disturbances of nerve chemical production, degeneration in multiple organ systems, etc.
We used to think free radical production was a function of unhealthy lifestyles in adults. We now know this isn't true. Our children are at as high a risk or higher than adults. The main reasons are in our children's diets, the plastics that go into their mouths (containg bis-phenyl A), fumes from new carpets, etc., etc.
