The Role of Phytonutrients
  • There is abundant evidence from epidemiological studies that the phytochemicals in fruits & vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of cancer

  • This is probably due to polyphenol and anti-inflammatory effects of the phytnutients

  • Phytonutients (or phytochemicals) are anything derived from food substances that have a beneficial effect in our bodies

  • Phytochemicals have been used as drugs for thousands of years

  • Hippocrates (Father of Medicine) in 400 BCE used to prescribe willow tree leaves to reduce and break a fever

  • Salicin (with potent anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties) was originally extracted from the White Willow Tree. It later was synthetically produced to become the stable OTC drug Aspirin
