The Role of Phytonutrients
|
- The # 1 drug for cancer worldwide is Taxol (paclitaxel). It is a phytonutrient initially extracted and purified from the Pacific Yew Tree
- Diindolylmethane (from Brassica vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts) is currently used as a treatment for Recurring Respiratory Papillomatosis tumors. It is in Phase III clinical trials for cervical dysplasia (precancerous condition caused by Human Papilloma Virus or HPV)
- It is also in clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute for a variety of cancers (breast, prostate, colon, lung & cervical)
- Some phytochemicals with potent medicinal properties are elements and not complex organic molecules
- Lycopene (from tomatoes and pasta sauce) is in clinical trials for cardiovascular diseases & prostate cancer
- Lutein and Zeaxanthin (spinach) have been shown in clinical trials to directly improve human visual performance & help prevent the onset of macular degeneration and cataracts
- Turmeric and Chia seeds (Salba) have have anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is also active against melanoma (skin cancer)
