The Role of the Biological Sugars

1996-A New Look at Glycobiology

  • In 1996, the Big 8 sugar theory was validated by Harper’s Biochemistry.
  • Harper’s Biochemistry is the premier medical textbook for educating doctors on biochemistry.
  • The 24th edition states:“Out of the 200 monosaccharides are found in nature, only eight are specifically used for the transfer of biological information.”
  • Another discovery was made at the same time is that the average modern diet normally provides only 2 of these 8 necessary sugars.
  • We could have a deficiency of these sugars and that deficiency could lead our cells to not communicate
  • This could ultimately lead to conditions not optimal for our body.
